The Wombats – Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life (2018) Another pleasant album title. And the cover features a red sweater with a big snake on it… with lots of flowers. Once again, our fabulous Wombats don’t disappoint! This must be their fourth album… if you don’t count their B-Sides album. Still typically English, still at the pinnacle of Indie Rock. There are also female backings on one song at least, and electro touches just right. The melodies and arrangements are always fabulous. The singer, who really knows how to use his voice, seems to be extremely intelligent with his incredible lyrics. I really have to write some to prove it:
“I try to be human, but that never works”
“Black, I only wear black”
“Spring in my step, knife in my back”
“It’s just what I’m like, I keep it inside”
“Pills in my pocket, head in the sky”
“I only wear black”
“I moved to LA and it rained every single day’
“But I don’t really care whether its grey skies or blue”
“I don’t know why I like you, but I do!”
“I need you the most…)”
In fact, I could go on and on and write down all their lyrics.
This band started out with a brave first album, because it wasn’t commercial. Over time, they became a little more commercial, but never lost their quality. Hats off to one of the best bands of the last fifteen years.
The Wombats – Fix Yourself, Not The World (2022) Incredible! But I don’t know what’s more incredible!!! Is it the fact that I just discovered and listened to this album about 3 times? Is it the fact that tears came to my eyes while listening to it ??Â
Or the fact that this crazy band has made nothing but pearls of albums since 2007, and in 2022, they’ve lost none of their quality ??? Always with their lyrics that can’t help but speak to us and reach right into our hearts. No, I think Morrissey has found his successor in this kind of band ! But he could be in for a scare and be dethroned in no time. As with him, the Wombats’ tracks are fabulous, like “Don’t Poke a Bear” or the wonderful “Everything I love is going to die”.
Lyrics like
“Everybody wants to be the man The singer of the band”
“It’s not paranoia if it’s really there”Â
“I’ll say it again but without feeling”Â
In fact, I can’t help but include at least two paragraphs from “Work Is Easy, Life Is Hard”, which is so true:
“Burn the island, then burn the boat”
“Howl into the void again”
“Another idiot with a brand new phone”
“Spit shining the halo on the head”
“Why don’t you chop my tongue out
Then put my insides inside a jar”
“You shake me up, you shake me down”
“Work’s easy, but life’s gettin’ hard “
This song sounds like a mega-copy of “Never Enough” by the legendary Cure.
It might enchant those who don’t like Robert Smith’s voice and vocals.
Personally, I love both songs. A mashup of the two wouldn’t go amiss !
Well…No need to go any further. You’ve got it: I love this band! Once again, the arrangements, the humor, the no-holds-barred, extraordinary musical talent of this too-British band that all fans of ultra-good Indie Rock music should know about. What about people who listen to really bad music ? We don’t need them here!!!
