Inception is a sci-fi thriller directed by Christopher Nolan. The perception of this film changes a lot in relation to our state of mind. I wasn’t in the right frame of mind the first time. I’d just come out of an exhausting day’s work, I went to the last cinema showing, which started after 11pm, and I even dozed off at one point… whereas you have to see everything in this film to get the gist of it.

Indeed, this film is anything but meaningless. Another film with Matrix-style special effects, but with important messages. After that, you can ask yourself a thousand questions, interesting or not. Can we really impose an idea through dreams? And what’s with this guy who’s fixated on the death of his girlfriend and who screws up missions?

I do think there’s far too much action towards the end, which adds absolutely nothing to the film apart from keeping the viewer awake.  That said, the idea of dreams within dreams, and the relativity of time within dreams, is a subject that fascinates me. And I can’t look at a spinning top without thinking of this film!

Christopher Nolan is still a great director. He just needs to shorten his films. As for the cast, it’s once again a dream reunion: Leonardo DiCaprio, always good. But regularly a little too over excited too. His character is annoying, but understandably so. His performance is grandiose. Michael Caine, the stylish, elegant British actor, is also part of the cast, but we don’t get to see much of him. It’s better than nothing! He only interacts with DiCaprio here.

Cillian Murphy, always true to form. He’s often very scary, but you can’t help but smile when you’re used to seeing him. Ken Watanabe has extra charisma, but I always forget where I see him. Anyway, he’s here ! Joseph Gordon-Levitt, an actor I don’t particularly like, is relatively decent here. Probably his best role. It’s a bit the same for Tom Hardy, I’m not too fond of him, but I know less about him too. Joseph, I can honestly say that I haven’t liked a film he’s directed either. Tom, on the other hand, deserves credit for being the comic relief in this film. He does it very well

Marion Cotillard plays someone troubled, lost, but also manipulative. As usual, a French actress is very much up to Hollywood standards. Ellen Page! Ahhh! I miss her! Elliot Page has taken her place. It’s great to see Elliot again when he was still a woman. I’m not crazy about all of Ellen/Elliot’s films. Hard Candy remains one of my favourite films, despite being hard to watch.

I can understand why you might not like this film. But there’s no denying that it’s good.

It probably can’t be seen again and again. Chances are it will bore even the most die-hard fans.

Even so, it’s admirable because there are no scenes of torture or gratuitous violence. No bullets to the head, no slitting of throats. No unnecessary, dirty, embarrassing sex scenes either.

A great, important film. That’s all there is to it ! My rating ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
