Equals directed by Drake Doremus is about a futuristic society where displaying emotions is a crime. This sci-fi film is really very good. It is depressing as hell, so I won’t watch it too often. But its construction, its message, the hope it gives, as well as its actors (especially the two main ones) can receive little reproach from me.
Kristen Stewart: I can’t believe it was Twilight that made her famous… when I think it’s her worst role! She was great early on in the best Home Invasion movie “Panic Room” as Jodie Foster’s sick daughter. She is excellent as Joan Jett in the Runaways films. She is the funniest Charlie’s Angel in Charlie’s Angels 3. And the list goes on. And here she gives one of her best performances.
As did Nicholas Hoult, who excelled as the young Fawn in X-Men, as a gay man falling in love with a professor in “A single man”, as a zombie in love in “Warm Bodies” or as a totally insufferable character in the fairly decent “The Menu”. This actor seems unstoppable, so much his charisma, his acting and the films he chooses are made with care.
I was also very happy to see Guy Pearce in this film in a really nice role. This film made me think of many others, but the most important ones are the very interesting “Equilibrium”, the very good “Level 16” and probably also the excellent “Passengers”.
I asked myself: Will love triumph over everything in this film? Hardly, in any case. A cold film, with a world without emotions, where any feeling is seen as a disease. Almost no colour, everyone is dressed in white or light grey. Forests are rare and nature in general.
The frightening question is: how quickly could we fall into a world like this if the government decides to become drastically dictatorial, forcing soldiers to shoot anyone who feels love? Or who don’t take their pills to become real robots.Sooner than we think, no doubt. Unless we are already there. In any case, the process has already begun… which makes this kind of film more than important: they are becoming essential at the moment.
