It Follows (2014) I’m not one of those people who says no movie scares them. For “It Follows”, the story is really original, but I still feel the director has lost his way. He started off well, but it all comes to a head after running out of steam for the last 20 minutes or more. There were plenty of incoherent moments where I didn’t believe it for the simple reason that the protagonists did exactly the opposite of what I would have done, such as going upstairs or locking myself in a room. Finally, it becomes clear that this curse cannot be removed. It’s enough to put an end to the desire to make love and go for a walk afterwards. Sex is a common thread, and a ridiculous one at that. We pass on the curse like we pass on AIDS, or like we accidentally have a child simply because we didn’t feel like protecting ourselves. The message may be interesting, but it’s not subtle. Rather, it’s degrading. It’s not a film I’m going to entirely throw away, because Maika Monroe’s acting was up to par with her scream queen image, but one I won’t recommend watching the film more than once.
