Captivity (2007) I read quite a few reviews of this film before writing my own. So… yes, of course this film follows in the footsteps of Saw and Hostel. Let’s face it, it lacks the suspense of the former and the character of the latter. But whatever people say, my verdict is clear: the film is, in my opinion, a complete failure, like most films in the genre. It’s not the worst film, but it’s not a revelation either. If you approach it without high expectations, you’re treated to a torture thriller that’s quite entertaining, but at times really disgusting. A second-rate torture porn movie. It’s also a slasher thriller. It’s also a survival film, so there’s no harm in having your say.The film is relatively well made, but it’s not a quality film. We can’t say that the effects are badly done, for example. Where some people might enjoy the torture scenes, but say that the lead actress isn’t great, I’d argue the exact opposite. I like suspense, not gore. And Elisha Cuthbert is perfect in her role. Another one who was really cut out to be an actress. Let’s move on to Pruitt Taylor Vince, an actor who too often has disturbing roles. I wouldn’t have much interest in getting to know/meet him if I wasn’t open-minded. If that ever happens, I’ll ask him, with a big smile that I’m sure he’ll return, how he manages to be so despicable in certain roles. He was relatively outstanding in “Identity (2003)”, his most passable and watchable role was in “Mauvais piège – Trapped (2002)“. But I haven’t seen all his films. Apparently, he’s also in the excellent ‘Jacob’s Ladder (1990)’, which is a masterpiece… but I’ll have to see it again, after all these years. Let’s finish off with the seductive Daniel Gillies! I say that, but this actor regularly annoys me. He clearly doesn’t have Elizabeth Gillies’ charisma, but let me reassure you: they’re not related. No, they’re clearly not brother and sister. Nor are they married. Elizabeth, who believes she has Italian and Irish ancestry, was born in New Jersey and Daniel is from New Zealand and was born in Canada, so any relationship would be pretty strained, to say the least. However, they share no family history other than sharing the same surname.Elizabeth is married to Michael Corcoran, whom she married in 2020.Daniel is married to Rachel Leigh Cook, whom he married in 2004.They divorced in 2019, divorce finalised in 2020… but we’re not here to talk about all that!Daniel is okay in his role here… but doesn’t have the best charisma in the world, nor the toughest role to play. The film has a happy ending and for that alone, and for Elisha, I’d give this piece of dreck two stars.
