Shocking Blue – Ten songs for you (2023) I’m not sure whether this compilation will be released in physical form. Chances are you’ll only be able to listen to it on streaming music platforms. The fact remains that Shocking Blue is an important band worth knowing, if only for its musical culture.

Arguably one of the best Dutch rock bands. They formed in The Hague in 1967, disbanded in 1974 and reformed several times. Their biggest hit remains Venus (created in 1969 and covered by so many bands, including Bananarama, who also made it an 80’s hit).

Van Leeuwen, guitarist and second vocalist, had already formed a band, but when he saw Mariska Veres singing at a party one night, he was so enthusiastic that he fired his own singer and hired her. Mariska, a very charismatic singer, sadly died in 2006 of cancer. Shocking Blue created a lot of incredible songs. If you’ve only heard Venus, it’s time to at least discover Beggin’. And, of course, the song Love Buzz was covered by Nirvana. And that’s just the beginning!
