MARINA – Love + Fear (2019) Fourth album from the fabulous singer, who manages to stay in the same race as Bat for Lashes or Florence & The Machine, even if it may seem a little inferior to the first two. First album released under the name “Marina” rather than Marina & The Diamonds.Last album released before the coronavirus pandemic. Personally, I’ve never disliked this artist’s work. Even if I find it a bit stagnant. The four albums that came out after the first one are more or less at the same level. But none of them can match the ingenuity, creativity, originality and power of “Marina & The Diamonds – The Family Jewels”, which appeared in 2010 and heralded the arrival of one of the best singer-songwriters of the decade. Unfortunately, I’m not predicting any extraordinary new songs from her between now and the end of the 2020s. That said, you don’t know how much I’d love to be wrong and grandly surprised. Getting back to this record, it’s 16 songs lasting 56 minutes and 16 seconds, deliciously brought to life, speaking of paradise, love and fear with an enormous amount of poetry. Musically, it calms, soothes and makes you dream. It’s the opposite of an album that makes you aggressive or angry. Unless, of course, you hate this hyper-worked-out style of pop music, which is, let’s face it, designed to appeal to the masses.
