This is a review of Netflix’s “In the Shadow of the Moon.” Once again, it’s hard to talk about this film without giving away the plot. It’s about a serial killer who commits some pretty gruesome, yet incomprehensible crimes.
If that’s enough to make your mouth water, you can be sure that mine will too! Especially since we don’t see that many female serial killers in the movies. That’s it! If you want to see it, that’s all you need to know. If, on the other hand, you want to risk reading Spoiler Alert, you can go ahead. Otherwise, I’m already saying “Au Revoir”!
For the rest of you… Spoiler Alert: This film has been compared to “Army of the 12 Monkeys” or “Looper”.
The former is much better. The second… I didn’t like it either! Okay, as you can see, this film, which is classified as a thriller, takes a sci-fi turn. And I can’t stand it! This film was perfect for over 45 minutes. Alas, as soon as it took on the unreal side, it lost all flavor in my eyes. And as it lasted 1h 55min, it was about 1h 10 min too long!
This film squandered its potential in exactly the same way as 2004’s “Memory Erased – The Forgotten” and 2016’s “10 Cloverfield Lane”. If I had to rewrite this story and script, I’d take out the sci-fi and put in a copycat story.
Incidentally, the 1995 film Copycat, starring the trio Sigourney Weaver, Holly Hunter & Dermot Mulroney, was really good. I’m not going to talk about all the actors, but let’s go for : Boyd Holbrook: I really liked him.
As we see him every 9 years in this film, I wonder in what order the film was shot. But the more time passes, the more bearded and long-haired he becomes. It’s a safe bet that the film was shot in reverse, from the most recent to the most distant past. It’s easier to cut than to let it grow! Rather likeable American actor. On the other hand, Cleopatra Coleman, who is a very beautiful actress… managed to become quite ugly for this role. It’s amazing what a change it makes to see her unsmiling and with a shaved head. It’s not a haircut that suits her, unlike Sigourney Weaver, to speak of her again. Sigourney has a face and a charisma that make everything look good on her!
Cleopatra can’t be an easy name to live up to. This Australian actress is best known for her role as Erica in a TV series. And speaking of series, Michael C. Hall is also best known for his role as Dexter. All these actors are good. They’ve just rushed into a movie that’s a dud and, as a result, very bad. So much for this movie!
