Ready Player One (2018) Oh dear, dear. Originally, I wanted to write my review without reading any others… but I cracked! And maybe I did the right thing, because… today, I’m not that happy, not as much as those who know me expect! I didn’t really like this film. I didn’t want to see it, but a friend recommended it. He’ll hear me out 😉

Ready Player One is very well made, of course…But you really have to be a fan of virtual reality or video games. Which I’m not.The nods to the Iron Giant, Chucky, King Kong, Jurassic Park, Terminator and the immersion in Shining are great… but it lacks depth. And in a film in which you’re supposed to realize the magic of reality after all… well, that’s a real shame. The Black Mirror series is perfect in this respect. If you want to see this film for Simon Pegg, you should know that he doesn’t play for more than 5 minutes in this film, which is over two hours and ten minutes long. I thought a little of Final Fantasy when I saw the main character’s avatar, I also thought of the latest Jumanji and of course Avatar itself. To think that Strange Days is 20 years old… and that at the time it seemed so avant-garde when it came to virtual immersion! A film that is undoubtedly good, even grandiose, but alas, I’m not part of the audience that went crazy for it. That said, it’s true: not for a moment did I think it was Spielberg. I didn’t recognize his professionalism. Rather, his eclecticism. I thought this was a first film by a new director. Yes, okay, with a lot of means and who would have given it his all, given everything!

My Rating
