Southland Tales (2006) is an comedy/sci-fi film directed by Richard Kelly with an ensemble cast. The story follows the events happening to a small group people during a three-day heatwave before a big July 4 celebration. Personally, I think it’s a load of rubbish. The film is too long, probably because it’s so boring. The best scenes are the shortest. I’m sure I’m not the only one still trying to understand the story. Well… I was braver than those who only gave the film 20 minutes. And then turned it off! A disconcerting spectacle of images. A bizarre sci-fi film, confusing enough to provoke discussion about context and content. Unfortunately, I didn’t understand the film’s objective .Is it to show us the fascism that is taking hold in current systems, or how or what? Well made, but with no clear or understandable statement, perhaps only for die-hard fans? This film probably appeals to fans of Donnie Darko (of which I am not), for example, who will think that this film is a little gem. For a neutral viewer, I think this strange world opens up for barely two hours, but once it’s closed, that’s it. It’s entertaining, but nothing more. There’s something for everyone.
