Little Woods (2018) Possibly also known as “Crossing the Line”. Typical drama with people who get drunk and fight; people who want to get back on the straight and narrow, but still sell drugs; a woman who’s pregnant, but tells the father she wants an abortion… Nothing new under the sun, nothing original. But, boy, are the actors good. We can leave that to the film. The two actresses, Lily James and Tessa Thompson, do a marvelous job. Not necessarily the kind of film I’m interested in, alas. Despite its power, which I can’t deny was a long time coming for me. A slice of life. We don’t really know what happened before, or what’s going to happen after. I haven’t found many reviews of this film. It’s not a well-known feature film. I think this one is worth a look: “A good suspense drama mastered by excellent performances. We go from “don’t do that” to exasperation, from hope to tension. All this in a distressed, pressured social environment in rural North Dakota. Always realistic, never overdone, never over-the-top, the direction is soft, leaving room for the story, the pitfalls of life and the “complicated” relationships.”
