Hellboy – Call of Darkness (2019) Well, I really liked it. Another hero who, like Watchmen, is neither from DC nor Marvel. Third film with this hero. This is a reboot, so it doesn’t take into account the previous two films. It’s the ending and the winks that link them.

Admittedly, it’s not as good as the other two. More brutal, more gory (but was that really necessary?). The kissing scene is pretty disgusting… and pretty pointless too! Still a lot of vulgarity, which adds an element reminiscent of Deadpool. The characters are good, the action scenes are always spectacular and the villains, who are all sorts of creatures, are as charismatic as ever. David Harbour is the new Hellboy. He’s doing pretty well. But it’s obviously very hard to forget Ron Perlman, who is generally irreplaceable.

A bit like when we lost Morgan Freeman in Alex Cross (which was the third film starring Alex Cross!), it was hard to get used to. I wonder what the next guy to play Wolverine will be like! Yes, because I don’t think they’re going to stop the X-Men. There’s still plenty to do. All the actors are decent. Ian McShane plays the father. Sasha Lane plays the new female member of the team. As for Milla Jovovich, even when she’s playing her worst roles, she always manages to pull it off. She has such charisma that she doesn’t need to try too hard to shine. She’s a natural.

We find Daniel Dae Kim here, an actor best known for his series, especially ‘Lost’, whom some people followed in Hawaii Five-O, in which he joins the actor who played Hurley in Lost. Not necessarily convinced by his character here, but it’s good to see him again.

Good entertainment. I got what I wanted, broadly speaking. Great story, great pace, a superhero who fights against a backdrop of rock music. Yes, Hellboy is a horror film with superheroes. Of course, there’s also some fantasy and that’s all very nice, despite the major exaggerations that I’ll forgive once again.
