Critters Attack! (2019) Critters is an American horror film series made up of five films and, apparently, a TV series. As if that wasn’t bad enough! Critters Attack! is a 2019 horror comedy film. It’s a reboot of the 1986 Critters film and the fifth installment in the Critters franchise.

Although actress Dee Wallace was rumoured to be playing a new heroine separate from her Helen Brown character, Wallace herself has confirmed that she is reprising the original role, with a name change to ‘Aunt Dee’ due to potential legal issues. Crazy! It’s not the worst film in the saga/franchise. The humour is relatively heavy, but it has some really funny stuff too. Totally unreal, there’s also an element of absurdity in it all.

Is there anything in this film that deserves 5 stars? Yes, probably the actress Tashiana Washington. At least, at the beginning and at the end. She’s also a singer. She’s an American film and television actress. Washington is best known for her role in the award-winning film Gimme the Loot as well as her role in the film Shaft alongside Samuel L. Jackson, Jessie T. Usher and Regina Hall. She was born and raised in Queens, New York. In 2013, she starred in Gimme the Loot, for which she received a 2014 Black Reel nomination for Best Female Performance. Complex magazine named Washington one of 25 emerging actresses to know in 2013.I’m going to give this film two stars! For her, for the good humour, at times, for the fact that not all the violent scenes are ultra gory. What’s more, they’ve kept the old special effects and that’s a real pleasure.

It’s got everything in common with Slotherhouse, which isn’t much better, but still makes you smile. That said, you get the feeling that the film is trying to steal from Gremlins everything that made the often copied, never equaled masterpiece such a success. There’s even a white creature, cuter and kinder, but one that shouldn’t be stepped on. And, inevitably, we’re reminded of Gizmo. Basically, we’ve been waiting years for a Gremlins 3 and all we get is Critters 5!!!
