We Summon The Darkness (2019) is a 2019 horror/thriller. I didn’t have a good feeling about this film from the start. Why didn’t I? Because it’s a film starring Alexandra Daddario. So why watch such a movie? Because I love Alexandra Daddario! Yes, despite the fact that she plays in a ton of bad movies.
As for Maddie Hasson, I don’t think she’s done anything amazing either. For all we know, this film is her biggest project! Johnny Knoxville is also in the cast. He’s as detestable here as he was charming in Small Apartments (2012). Amy Forsyth is a pleasant surprise, but she can’t save the film either, even if the ending remains drinkable.
So! The first ten minutes are directly gripping and great… but after that, it quickly drags on for the next fifteen minutes. Then there’s an unexpected and unusual turn of events. You can think it’s great, but you can also think it’s ridiculous. And then it’s a low-grade horror film with bloody murders.
But the big question this film makes me ask is: it’s easy to criticize the devil, Satanists, hard rock and heavy metal… but how many deaths have extremist Christians caused?
There are some funny moments, but that’s mainly because the villains are stupid. We’re not dealing with Mafia bosses here, but rather more or less clumsy sadists.
All right! I’m going to stop dragging this review out. Let’s get straight to the point: yes, this movie sucks! Despite a couple of good moments, there really isn’t much to salvage.
PS: The film features two good songs: Belinda Carlisle’s “Heaven is a place on Earth” and T’Pau’s “Heart & Soul” and, in the end, only sullies these fine titles.
