Look Who’s Back a.k.a. Er ist wieder da (2015)

Written on 25. October 2016 by Biboz. – Wonderful idea! Extraordinarily funny at first. Unfortunately, it runs out of steam. Only to bounce back for an ending that’s not too bad! Voila!!! I could score just that as a review and it would be fine. But the lead actor is great. The others are decent, both in their annoyance and in their naivety and comedy. This film could have been American, English or French… but NO: it’s GERMAN! Which makes me respect this people even more, whose image of Nazism still sticks today.

Germans have discipline, they know how to party and they don’t lack a sense of humour. It’s true that it’s easy to criticise Hitler today. And yet, if he were here today, just as many people as then would vote for him. History repeats itself endlessly, because it’s hard to learn the real lessons. Hitler reappearing like that would be an upheaval for everyone. The neo-Nazis would see him as a usurper who mocks Nazism. And people on the left would take him for a very good comic who knows how to put his finger where it’s needed to shock and make people think. How many people would find that most of what he says is right and true? What percentage? More than half? It’s that kind of thinking that’s interesting!

Is Hitler still one of us? Would we have voted for him too? Who are the people like him today? Sad reality. I find the film has its lengths, but it definitely has depth and is very topical with its themes. A political comedy, but with a disillusionment factor. Whether Adolf would really be like this is questionable. his love of occult practices is not an issue in the film, on the contrary. We can’t wipe out evil. But we must not give up the fight to roll it back.
