47 Meters Down: Uncaged (2019) I’ve only read one mini-review of this film. Someone who didn’t bother and just wrote: “Rarely seen such absurdity, stupidity, bullshit!!!” Funny! I can relate. This film really won’t be to everyone’s taste.

But for me, it’s a good shark or underwater thriller. The heart rate quickens, the breath stops… and the sensation of suffocation arrives. Whenever I see people underwater in movies, I can’t help but hold my breath too. And I always tell myself that in all these situations, I won’t even last five minutes!

47 Meters Down: Uncaged has almost nothing in common with the first. Let’s just say there’s more of a wink at the end, when people watch sharks behind glass underwater. But apart from that, we don’t see any of the characters from the first film, and the film isn’t based on a descent into a cage to see sharks.

In the first film, everything takes place underwater in an immense, uncrowded aquatic space. Here, it’s much more claustrophobic, as the protagonists are chased by a shark during a visit to an ancient underwater city. From then on, the chase takes place in the maze of an underwater labyrinth. Of course, you don’t have to be claustrophobic, aquaphobic or thalassophobic.

At times, the film is a little murky. There are scenes where you can’t see a thing. As a result, you realize that this is even scarier than not knowing whether the danger is ten meters away… or one meter. But these moments can seem long and boring if you can’t get into the mood.

The four lead actresses are pretty cool. A nice little team. Their characters are relatively oblivious… but strongly courageous too, in the end.

The sharks are quite well done, except when they eat their prey. There, the tricks are overexaggerated and you just can’t believe it. But the delirium is understandable.

Another cage-diving movie would be “Open Water 3”, but you can forget about that one. Similar good films: the first “47 Meters Down”, “The Reef” or “the Shallows”. In a pinch, “Jaws” does the trick too! I’m horrible to say this, but as incredible as Spielberg is, Jaws isn’t my favorite film of the genre, even if it’s still a success, that goes without saying! Okay… I’ll have to watch Dark Tide (2012) soon.

My Rating

Rating: 3 out of 5.
