Méandres (2021) (English Title: Meander) First piece of friendly advice: if you’re claustrophobic, don’t watch this film! Second: if you don’t like closed-door horror films, don’t watch it either! Other than that, I was recommended this film… and it was good advice. It was a one-off.
The story of a woman who, after losing her daughter, becomes tortured, weak and suicidal. But another immense tragedy forces her to overcome her fears, to surpass herself and become stronger than ever.
Clearly inspired by the likes of Cube, this is a no-nonsense film that gets straight to the point. A dream film for those who’ve always wanted a movie full of traps without too much dialogue.
The lead actress pulls it off wonderfully. For those of you who watch movies on fast-forward, be warned that you’re just not going to feel anything. Because this film is suffocating, disturbing and chilling. The direction is good.
As for the pace, I’d say it’s normal, given that the aim is to put you in the protagonist’s shoes. If it’s slow, it’s obviously deliberate.
French film and horrific thriller sound rather false, or at best make you smile gently. But it’s still a good time, full of surprises and suspense. The ending is a bit of a cliffhanger. There are still a lot of unanswered questions. But that’s how it is in real life!
