Nowhere (2023) Nowhere is a Spanish survival thriller directed by Albert Pintó. It’s pretty gruesome. Horribly dramatic, I should say.
Set in a dystopian setting, the plot follows Mia (Anna Castillo), who is separated from her husband after a totalitarian government takes over their home country. They try to make their way back to Ireland, a country that seems safe at the time.
The film has been made available to stream on Netflix. The first 20 minutes were very hard for me. A fairly traumatic massacre scene probably scarred me for life. Castillo is a stunning actress. Everything here rests on her and she carries this film perfectly on her broad, solid shoulders. The element that makes the film even more dramatic is the fact that the survivor is pregnant to the hilt.
This film is more or less a masterpiece. It’s well made, very well edited, well acted, etc. But I find it hard to watch. Yes, I find it hard to give a survival film 5 stars, because it’s always despicable, disgusting and, alas, nauseating. As a result, they’re not films I could watch again and again.
In this film, the baby and a whale play an important role. It’s a stifling, relatively realistic, powerful and really sad film. But, as always, as long as there’s hope…
