Bottom of the World (2017) Honestly… this film made me think of sub-Stephen King! It might be reminiscent of that genius writer, but it’s far from it. Twenty minutes into the film, I knew it was going to be very long and a real pain in the arse to watch. When a film is ultra-bad, you hope that an incredible ending will save the day. But nay!
Jena Malone in a film is already very often a sign of a good film to throw away. What’s more, she plays an insufferable character. Which just goes to show that she’s got some talent… but she mustn’t have much choice in her films. Unless she really does it on purpose! Well… on reflection, she was in the excellent Ma meilleure ennemie or La Blonde de mon père in Quebec (Stepmom), in Sucker Punch, in Antebellum and in Into the Wild. But the funny thing is, I don’t remember her in any of those films! Which proves that it wasn’t her who tipped the scales in the right direction. There are two or three interesting lines in this film, though!”People tend to look at the world around them rather than their inner world.””If I’m in a dream… then why would my subconscious put a rotten pea in it!”No, really!
Not even Douglas Smith’s fine acting will save this dreck. Tamara Duarte plays a role that any beautiful actress could have played. Only probably better! It’s a real pleasure to see Ted Levine. But we don’t see that much of him. He is best known for playing the serial killer Buffalo Bill in The Silence of the Lambs, and more recently the character of Captain Leland Stottlemeyer in the series Monk. Two incredible roles.
A slow, boring, irritating film that doesn’t really answer any questions, even though it asks a lot of them. And it goes round in circles. In short!Really bad.
