Hypnotic (2023) Another failed film by Robert Rodriguez! They can’t all be masterpieces like From Dusk Til Dawn (1996), apparently! I already don’t like Sin City (2005), Alita (2018) is nice, but quickly seen and quickly forgotten, Grindhouse – Planet Terror (2007) is OK, but far from excellent, The Faculty (1998) is a bit similar, quite nice, but not great,Machete (2010) is far from great, I’ve never seen Groom Service (1995), on the other hand (a film with four stories by four different directors).
As you can see, Rodriguez is not one of my favourite directors. As for Desperado, I’ll have to see it and its sequel again before I can write my reviews. In short! This film is far too exaggerated to be taken seriously.
There’s far too much unrealistic stuff going on and, as a result, it’s taken for a sci-fi film rather than a good thriller. It’s a shame! At least, that’s for the first part. And I can understand why some viewers got up and left halfway through the film. The second half tries to explain what really happened. And that gives the film a breath of fresh air that suddenly makes it interesting… but it quickly falls by the wayside.
Ben Affleck again in a good atmosphere, just like in Gone Girl, but both are bad films, alas. I didn’t know Alice Braga, but I was delighted to see William Fichtner again as the big bad, and to see the charismatic Jeff Fahey and Jackie Earle Haley.
