Ride (2018) This is the story of an Uber driver who goes on a deadly ride. This is a film classified under Thriller/Action. But it’s mostly a good Thriller. Which isn’t bad at all. After all, it’s so easy to fall into a bad Action movie.
James is an Uber driver who dreams of becoming an actor. One evening, when the beautiful Jessica gets into his car, he has no idea what will happen next. The next passenger turns out to be a manipulator who turns their journey through Los Angeles into a psychological struggle for survival.
Usually, I tend to say that whenever Bella Thorne is in a film, it’s automatically going to be bad. But this could be her best film yet. Bella was born in Florida and has brothers and sisters who are all actors or models. She has announced that she suffers from dyslexia. She is pansexual and polyamorous. She lives in Los Angeles, California, and landed her first role in 2003, but is also a singer. She is a star on social networks, and also on OnlyFans, where she won over a million dollars in 24 hours. In doing so, she broke the site’s previous record, enabling her to record a second album. To do this, she advertised that she would send her subscribers a ‘sexy photo’ for $200 each. The album earned over two million dollars in one week. However, as the photo was not ‘naked’ as advertised, many subscribers asked for their money back. Thorne’s actions put OnlyFans’ other suppliers at a disadvantage. As a result, OnlyFans was forced to change its terms of use. As you can see, Bella knows how to get noticed and there’s no risk of her running out of money any time soon! I’ll take this opportunity to talk about her, because there’s not much to say about the film!
Indeed, it’s a good, entertaining time, in the vein of Collateral (2004) with Tom Cruise, Jamie Foxx, Mark Ruffalo and Jada Pinkett, but relatively less good. I thought Collateral was excellent, whereas Ride is just okay. It’s mainly the ending that spoils everything. It’s not clichéd, but it’s a bit ridiculous and comes to a screeching halt. I would have liked to know what happens to the three characters afterwards. That said, the film has plenty of very nice moments, such as reciting Shakespeare while driving. The dialogue is interesting enough for thriller fans. Obviously, if you’re only a fan of science, history and politics, the film will seem insipid. There’s a totally surreal and unexpected moment when the protagonists sing R Kelly’s ‘Ignition’, all together, in the car, even though they’re in the middle of a tragedy! It was one of those scenes that I watched several times in a row. Compared to all the very bad films I’ve seen in my life, this film is still a pleasant surprise. PS: In Italian, the film is called ‘Corsa Infernale’, which means ‘Infernal Race’!
