The Pigeon Détectives – Emergency (2008) https://www.thepigeondetectives.com/
The Pigeon Detectives are a British indie rock band from Leeds, England. Formed in 2004, they have five studio albums to their name. The first, Wait for Me, went platinum in the UK and reached number 3 on the UK Albums Chart, while the second, Emergency, went gold and reached number 5. And it’s well deserved!
In fact, I have a special relationship with this album.
Let me explain: a drummer I used to play with in a band made me a copy. But I listened to it too much and it started skipping at one point. Track 5 was damaged and despite the few times I tried to clean it, I couldn’t get it back.
So I bought it for myself, because it’s an essential part of my collection.
Every time I listen to this album, it’s a pure delight.
As someone who asks too many questions, I regularly ask myself, after two or three songs, if this record is really that good, if it really deserves 5 stars. And every time I get to the last track, I go back to the beginning. It’s inevitable!
If this band reminded me of another, I’d say The Wombats.
The singer’s accent makes me rejoice. And these indie rock pros know how to write beautiful, simple love lyrics, even when talking about complicated subjects. Very poetic and touching against a musical backdrop that is sometimes calm, but regularly very powerful.
I’ve been researching the punk band 999, who also did a song called Emergency. And every time I come across these Pigeon Detectives… which reminds me that I have to listen to them regularly.
And that’s it!
I hope I haven’t forgotten anything. If not, it’ll be in a future episode.
