Turbulence – It’s a killer ride (1997) Relatively lame, bad and unsuccessful! A relatively ridiculous film! Where Passenger 57 (1992) is excellent, this one misses almost everything in its path. And I’m not just talking about the landing!

There’s Ray Liotta (as the big bad), Ben Cross, Lauren Holly (as a rather heroic stewardess), but also Héctor Elizondo (pretty useless here), the man who played Jon Flint when he more or less replaced John Ashton (who played Superintendent John Taggart) in Beverly Hills Cop 3. Taggart appeared in the first one in 1984, the second one in 1987 and he’s back in the fourth one, set in 2024.

Producers David Valdes and Martin Ransohoff, director Robert Butler and all those involved in cinematic camera direction such as Lloyd Ahern 2 and A.S.C. have all wasted their time, without wishing to be too unkind! But let’s just say that this film won’t be remembered for a long time and that it’s too overblown to be exciting, despite a promising start. There are a lot of clichés, a lot of naïveté and a lot of nauseating nastiness, the maudlin moments are pathetic, infuriating and irritating, but above all there’s a lot of stuff you just don’t believe in, like this plane that goes through the worst kind of turbulence on automatic pilot.

At one point, it flips over, then straightens out again! And it’s someone who isn’t qualified to do that who’s going to fly it. So there you have it! To each his own, but personally I don’t think spoiling this film is a crime.

It’s very difficult to stay focused on this turnip, as it can give a bad image of 90s films, even though it was a pretty safe decade with a hell of a lot of good feature films.
