Nomadland (2020) It’s quite a magnificent film, with expressive images, a fine story and stunning actors. It’s thought-provoking. Of course, it’s certainly not an action film! It’s about modern nomadism, with real nomads. For they are mixed in with the actors here. Yes, some of them are real. The film is touching in its simplicity, which is very different from our rather complicated and busy lives.

That’s not to say that it’s all good, but the film also exudes a certain serenity that feels good. On the one hand a billionaire who sends tourists into space, on the other his employees who can’t afford a roof over their heads. A film full of humanity, truly touching and complex in its simplicity. No, really: a very good film.

Basically, I didn’t understand everything and went off into my thoughts several times, as the film struggled to captivate me throughout. Some of the dialogue is more interesting than others. But Frances McDormand is always exceptional, with a disconcerting naturalness. And it’s always a pleasure to see David Strathairn again.

Simple, poetic, quite thoughtful, despite everything… it’s not a masterpiece, but it’s a really good film. That said, Chloé Zhao shouldn’t have gone on to make Superheroes. With The Eternals, she could have done better. Or let someone else do it.
