Amityville – The Awakening (2017) Just six months ago, I hated Bella Thorne. And yet I watched this film for her! Basically, I’d seen some really rubbish films with her and I just thought she was only good for OnlyFans… Then I suddenly saw two of her films in a row that I really enjoyed… including Ryde which was made the same year as this film. The other is a Netflix film, whose name I can’t remember at the moment, in which she plays the psychopath.
I’m not a huge fan of Jennifer Jason Leigh either, basically. Although Single White Female is one of my favourite films of all time. But I wouldn’t watch a film just for her. Apparently there’s a producer from Split, Get Out and The Purge who’s been there. I liked this film even better than all three! To tell the truth, I’m not keen on Amityville either, at least not to the extent of wanting to watch or read everything about this house. But I have to admit that this was my favourite.
What’s more, I liked the remake more than the original, which really doesn’t happen to me very often. I’m not saying that the 79 original is bad. James Brolin & Margot Kidder were the perfect couple. As for the 2005 film, Ryan Reynolds was in one of his surprising roles. Accompanied by Melissa George, Chloë Grace Moretz, Rachel Nichols and Philip Baker Hall, the cast was flamboyant! There are nods to all those films in this one 😉
In any case, I know a lot of people will say it’s the worst, but to each his own. There’s no gore, no exaggerated violence, no incessant and pointless jump-scares. The film has a creepy atmosphere and creates a certain tension. The comatose brother is as terrifying as you could wish for and the actor, Cameron Monaghan, is terrific. The very young Mckenna Grace is adorable. A very good moment in one of the most famous haunted houses, if not the most famous.
