7 Guardians of the Tomb (2018) Another story about killer spiders! Already, it’s up to you whether you like it or not. This time, it’s a battle against giant spiders in a maze. Mind you, they’re not spiders the size of Arac Attack (2002). They’re even smaller! And it’s not a maze like the one in The Maze Runner (2014). On the other hand, there are tons of them! I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many spiders in a film. It’s more of an Action and Adventure film than anything else. But there’s obviously some horror.

It’s reminiscent of Goonies, Tomb Raider and Indiana Jones, except that there are arachnids everywhere, in every room! Kimble Rendall had already directed a comic horror film starring… Kylie Minogue!!! It’s called Cut (2000).

Rendall also made Bait (2012), a film with sharks. So I don’t know if it’s a good shark film or a gimmick. I’ll have to check. But I have my own idea, unfortunately.

This film is dedicated to Casper John McCallum, who lived from 1995 to 2016. But also in memory of Kristian Kielland. It relies mainly on actor Kellan Lutz and actress Bingbing Li (who are both pretty great), even though there’s a whole team behind them. We know full well that lots of people are going to die. I had fun guessing who was going to go first, who was going to die last and who was going to survive. Yes, you get some funny hobbies when you’re a fan of this kind of film.

The film is entertaining, funny and, of course, disgusting. It’s definitely not as bad as I thought it would be. I thought it was going to be one of the worst spider movies ever, but… no! It’s unpretentious and better made than a proper B-movie. So I’m not saying it’s ultra-realistic, but it’s not that badly made… otherwise I’d have stopped the film after half an hour or less.

The very last scene is quite ridiculous, although it does make you smile. It seems like it was almost obligatory to have a bad ending. But very good entertainment. In French, the number in the film’s title has been removed. It’s just: Guardians of the Tomb.

My Rating

Rating: 4 out of 5.
