Soccer Mommy – Evergreen (2024) Another gem from Sophia Regina Allison, better known by her stage name Soccer Mommy, an American singer-songwriter from Nashville, Tennessee. One of my favourite artists of recent years.
Soccer Mommy is more on the soaring side of alternative music. Much more in the vein of Illuminati Hotties than The Linda Lindas, Destroy Boys or Skating Polly. It’s still a real pleasure to listen to this album from A to Z, from the first note to the last. I’m going to see her with her band in a few months’ time. I could have waited until then to write a review and maybe I’ll come back to it, as I’m going to see the tour for this album. One thing’s for sure: she’s not about to disappoint me, as I’ve found all her work so far to be perfect.
The album is called Evergreen. And the album ends with the title track. Evergreen, like the song by Richy Mitch & the Coal Miners. What’s more, there are two bands with names like that! Evergreen as in the band whose best-known song is called ‘Gemini’. Evergreen as in the other band whose biggest hit is ‘A Beautiful View’.
It’s also the lead song on The Darling Buds’ “Evergreen” EP (aptly), released on 21 April 2017 for a long-awaited, but, basically, unhoped-for comeback by the 80s band’s biggest fans. On Soccer Mommy, she wrote: ‘With Evergreen, I wanted you to feel as if you were lying outside, with your eyes closed, with the sun on you, while being able to smell the plants, trees and flowers’. If that’s all there is to it, the challenge is a resounding success, because Sophia manages to do that every time she composes. If you listen to this album at home, it will take your mind off things. But if you listen to it out in nature, you’ll feel even more connected to everything around you!
