CSS – Cansei De Ser Sexy (2006) Cansei de Ser Sexy (literally ‘(I’m) tired of being sexy’ in Portuguese), also known by the acronym CSS, is a Brazilian electronic rock band from São Paulo, Brazil.

It was formed in 2003, and consists of Lovefoxxx, Carolina Parra, Ana Rezende, Luiza Sá and, until the end of 2011, Adriano Cintra, who was the only male member. Their lyrics are in English and Portuguese and are often humorous and influenced by pop culture.

The band released four studio albums between 2005 and 2013, with the first two achieving international success. The band’s style is above all a clever blend of electronic rock and New Rave, not to be confused with New Wave! New Rave is a musical genre fusing elements of Rock, Hip-Hop, Electro and Funk.

It is described by The Guardian as ‘a homemade Disco riposte to the sensitive Indie Rock touted by bands like Bloc Party. Its stylistic origins are dance-punk, rave and post-punk revival. Its cultural origins date back to the early 2000s in the UK. Its typical instruments are the drum machine, bass, synthesiser and guitar.

Yes, it brings to mind bands like NYPC (formerly New Young Pony Club), Klaxons, Hadouken! who are all part of the New Rave movement (sometimes also called Nu Rave) and Fluokids.

I discovered this band with their third album from 2011: La Liberació.I already loved it, but I have to admit that I prefer this first album even more. It’s a great feeling to enjoy a record from the start and then discover one that’s even better. I don’t know why the second song on the album is cut before the end. That’s the kind of joke Blood Red Shoes also pulled on their fifth album. A joke not necessarily appreciated by the fans who would have liked the song to go on for hours.

This album is catchy, happy, engaging, funny, with a very punk attitude.Ideal for dancing or just cheering yourself up. Unlike a band like Mindless Self Indulgence, the band’s vulgarity doesn’t bother me as much, because it’s not all about that and their humour is funnier. Or more to my taste, I’ll say to try and remain objective.
