The Purge (2013) To tell you the truth……I saw so many negative reviews about this film… that I actually enjoyed it!I even saw it twice. When you expect something, you can always be surprised!

The Purge 2 – Anarchy (2014) We’re purging a second time! You really can ask yourself a lot of questions. What’s the director trying to say?Who’s he trying to hit? The bourgeoisie? But not all rich people are bad! On America? On the fact that this idea is completely stupid and would never work in reality?

Of course, Hostel already showed that people with lots of money pay people to torture them. But just because you drive a Mercedes doesn’t make you a monster. There’s one billionaire who goes around in jeans and a T-shirt.Here, it’s a mixture of thoughtfulness and a lot of nonsense, let’s face it. But that won’t stop me from seeing the third instalment, because I always like to make up my own mind about everything.Justice spells come into play this time. People fighting against the Purge. I wonder if the basic idea is that good or if it’s just been ultra badly exploited? It seems to me that it’s more the former, because a law like that wouldn’t stand up for a second. What about the desire for revenge? Can we really just go to work the next day and clean up after dead people like nothing happened just because this Purge is in the law?

Which comes back to my idea of bashing America. Is it as stupid as all that? Would ideas like this get through there?Apparently so: we’re right in the middle of it. Not in such a blatant way, but certainly in such an extreme way.So… this kind of film is an eye-opener, it seems to me.It’s a shame that the message won’t get across easily, because some people will watch just for the pleasure of the gratuitous violence.Amen to that!

The Purge 3 – Elections (2016) We’ve come full circle! It was great to see Elizabeth Mitchell again, especially as she’s the senator trying to stop the Purge. She already had a very interesting role in Lost, but also in the remake of V.

Even though both series ended in disaster. Does she choose her roles based on this? You’d think so, because even here it’s a bit in the same vein.I also like the fact that it’s the same director who’s doing this trilogy. He apparently created the idea. Then, depending on the film critics, he had to make a few adjustments and exploit other avenues that his idea could provide him with that couldn’t be exploited in the first episode. Then he had to say to himself that this story had to end with the Purge, but as it was an idea that worked well in his films to put an end to the reign of terror in the streets of American cities, he needed a scapegoat that all the criminals wanted to kill. So they also needed a team to protect him. And there are as many people against the Purge as there are viewers.

Except that…In the same way that if human beings didn’t have a religion, we’d find another excuse to wage war. Quite contradictory, isn’t it? We’re not made to live alone, but at the same time, as long as there are humans, there will be wars! So, anyway. With or without the Purge, crime will continue. The problem obviously lies elsewhere. Where the authorities are doing everything they can to keep us out 😉 Not an excellent film, but a good sequel. We get where we wanted to go from the end of the first film, from the second… and we realise that it doesn’t change a thing!

That’s as far as I got. 3 should have been the last. I don’t think 4 and 5 will do anything to change my view of these films.Once again, it’s only the first one that’s really worthwhile.
