Leprechaun Returns (2018) So… this is the first Leprechaun film I’ve seen and it goes without saying that it’s not a good one.
That said, the creature has a great sense of humour, reminiscent of Chucky and Freddy. Very dark, then! But quite funny at times. The dialogue is deliberately funny too! And there’s a ghostly character who’s particularly likeable. But it’s all the same to me: I like being scared, seeing scary monsters and demons, but I still don’t approve of gore, which I can easily do without. Seeing splashes of haemoglobin, maggots crawling out of mouths, eyes gouged out and guts spilling out of stomachs isn’t really my thing. It never was, with the exception of Fright Night 2 (1988), for example!
This film must be very faithful to those of the 90s. I think I’ll only see the first one, from 93, to get a broad idea. But I’m not going to waste my time seeing them all again. If I had to see every Freddy, Chucky, Friday the 13th, Halloween, Critters, Hellraiser… I wouldn’t make it. Not without a completely rotten brain! That’s how I always come back to the masterpiece that is Gremlins.
The second one is an excellent complement, as is the second Beetlejuice. And I understand even better why they didn’t make as many of them. It’s because as soon as there’s quality, there’s less fun to be had in turning it into nonsense, to the point of total disgust. Steven Kostanski is yet another director who doesn’t make films for me. Despite the positive points I’ve listed, plus the fact that I adore Taylor Spreitler and am happy to see her in the lead role, the film is too ridiculous, incoherent, absurd and disgusting for me to really praise it.
The biggest fans and enthusiasts will instead write a review along the lines of: ‘A very well made horror film, mixed with fantasy and comedy. It won’t bore you for a moment.’ To each his own!
