The Con Is On (2018) aka “The Brits Are Coming.” Lame? Oh no: Arch-ugly!!! No ! It’s not ok at all!!! Rarely seen such crap. Casting still OK, the rest is absolutely disappointing! Basically, sometimes I’m sick of defending films just because they have good actors. Such is the case in this movie. The cast includes Uma Thurman, Sofia Vergara, and Tim Roth. Other stars are Stephen Fry, Maggie Q, and Crispin Glover. Parker Posey and Alice Eve are also featured. Yet the film is utter rubbish!
It was a real pain to watch the whole film. Alice Eve does stand out, though, even though she was my least favourite actress in the film. Parker Posey is funny at first, but quickly becomes heavy-handed. This film even makes me doubt Uma Thurman! I asked my girlfriend if it was a crime not to like this actress too much? The answer was – of course not! Seriously, I’m not sure I’ve seen her in that many incredible roles. And the manipulative, cocaine-taking, seductress… aren’t those roles a bit too much for her? Even Tim Roth, who is usually excellent, only makes us laugh half-heartedly. Or should I say half of half. He’s just drinking here. There’s hardly a scene where he’s not serving himself and drinking alcohol. Anyone can do it!
Then there is Sofia Vergara. I think she’s one of the funniest women! But she confirms to me that she should be doing Stand-Up Comedy and not spoiling films. Her character is pretty pathetic here… even if the actress remains inimitable. Maggie Q is the one who brings violence to the film. She cuts throats and shoots bullets everywhere, even into heads. This violent side overshadows the film’s lighthearted comedy and makes it quite dark. Crispin Glover is definitely used to awful roles. We’ll never forget Crispin’s hilarious performance in Charlie’s Angels (2000) and the classic Back to the Future (1985). Stephen Fry is an extraordinary British actor never had the success of his former co-star, the great Hugh Laurie. Well… obviously, he wasn’t going to make it with this kind of film.
What a waste of talent! It’s always as if artists, actors and musicians want to distance themselves from what has made them endearing and famous. What a shame ! A real turnip! A pointless film with unsympathetic characters.
