Werewolves (2024)

Werewolves (2024) Steven C. Miller isn’t necessarily a director who interests me. We know that poor Bruce Willis hasn’t made very good films in the last decade. Marauders (2016) and First Kill (2017) are certainly considered among them. I haven’t seen them, so I can’t really know. I am basically not in a position to judge.

First Kill also features Hayden Christensen. I don’t think it will be an unforgettable film. It may only be memorable for its biggest fans, perhaps! Escape Plan 2 – Hades (2018) is the second in the trilogy starring Sylvester Stallone. I have to admit that I’m not too keen on it yet either. I have the distinct impression that the first one with Arnold Schwarzenegger will remain the best.

As for Aaron Eckhart and Dina Meyer, this won’t be the pinnacle of their careers. I don’t think Line Of Duty (2019) will be the best film of their careers.

So much for what I know about this director. Here, he’s done a decent enough job. Werewolves isn’t the best film in the genre, but it’s not the worst either. It’s better than Howling (of which I only really enjoyed the fifth and last!). It’s not as good as Werewolves of London or Paris (ref. An American Werewolf In London (1981) & An American Werewolf In Paris (1997).

The special effects weren’t great, especially in the action and fight scenes. Rather than using CGI, the special effects had a retro feel – quite faithful to the 80s. It’s a clever blend of the two. You can see that the creatures aren’t real (let’s face it!), but they’re still impressive and a lot of work has gone into them.

A film where we see the hero running in slow motion, where there’s a werewolf fight like in Wolf (1994), where we see lots of werewolves in packs like in The Howling 2, 3, 4…

In short, it’s hard to be ultra original. There’s no question of silver bullets here, but large-caliber ammunition nonetheless. Apparently, the Super Moon has unique power that can transform all those who look at it into bloodthirsty creatures. So no contagious bites here, either.

In fact, here’s the story: “A year ago, a supermoon caused a genetic mutation in millions of people that turned them into bloodthirsty werewolves as soon as they were exposed to moonlight. Since then, a group of scientists, including Wesley Marshall (Frank Grillo), have been conducting research to find an antidote. With another supermoon about to happen, it’s up to Wesley to save his family and all of humanity from these beasts.”

Good entertainment, but by no means essential. Probably, I would have enjoyed this film in my adolescent years. This film was less varied and not as interesting than the werewolf films I mentioned earlier. It lacks substance, it’s pretty empty and, what’s more, there’s very little humour. It takes itself a little too seriously, which isn’t a bad thing in itself. But it does make the atmosphere rather heavy.

Well… I think I’ll go and watch Loups-Garous – Werewolves Within (2021)!

On sait que le pauvre Bruce Willis n’a pas fait de très bon films cette dernière décennie et Marauders (2016) et First Kill (2017) ont font très certainement partie, bien que je ne les ai pas vu, alors… au fond, je ne peux pas vraiment savoir, ni être en capacité de juger.

Mais vu que First Kill comporte aussi Hayden Christensen, je ne pense pas que ce sera un film inoubliable, sauf pour ses plus grands fans, peut-être !Quant à Escape Plan 2 – Hades (2018), qui est le second de la trilogie avec Sylvester Stallone, j’avoue que je ne suis pas encore très motivé non plus. J’ai la nette impression que le premier avec Arnold Schwarzenegger restera le meilleur. Pour ce qui est de Aaron Eckhart et Dina Meyer, je ne pense pas que Line Of Duty (2019) soit le meilleur film de leur carrière. Voilà pour ce que je sais de ce réalisateur. Ici, il a fait un travail assez correct.

Werewolves n’est pas le meilleur film du genre, mais il n’est pas le pire non plus. Il est meilleur que les Howling (dont j’avais vraiment apprécié que le cinquième et dernier !). Il est moins bon que les Loups-garou de Londres ou de Paris (ref. An American Werewolf In London (1981) & An American Werewolf In Paris (1997)).Les effet spéciaux ne sont pas toujours terribles, notamment dans les scènes d’actions et de bagarres, mais le maquillage reste très fidèle aux années 80 plutôt qu’au images de synthèse. Il y a un habile mélange des deux. On voit bien que les créatures ne sont pas réelles (avouons-le !), mais ils sont quand même impressionnants et ont demandé bien du travail.

Un film où on verra le héros courir au ralenti, où il y aura un combat de loup-garous comme dans Wolf (1994), où on verra plein de loups-garous en meute comme dans The Howling 2, 3, 4…Bref ! Difficile de faire ultra original.Ici, pas question de balles d’argents, mais de munitions gros calibre, quand même. L’originalité résidera dans le fait qu’on comprend qu’une Super Lune peut transformer tous ceux qui la regardent en créatures assoiffées de sang. Donc pas de morsure contagieuses, ici non plus. En fait, voici l’histoire : «Il y a un an, une super lune a provoqué chez des millions de personnes une mutation génétique qui a transformé les personnes concernées en loups-garous assoiffés de sang dès qu’ils ont été exposés à la lumière de la lune. Depuis, un groupe de scientifiques, dont Wesley Marshall (Frank Grillo), mène des recherches pour trouver un antidote. Alors qu’une nouvelle super lune est sur le point de se produire, c’est à Wesley de sauver sa famille et l’humanité entière de ces bêtes.»Un bon divertissement, mais de loin pas essentiel.Je me demande si j’aurais adoré et aurait été content d’avoir ce film dans mon enfance-adolecence…

Et je pense que la réponse est Oui !Mais il est moins varié, subtile et intéressant que les films que j’ai mentionné tout à l’heure. Il manque de substance, il est assez vide et, de plus, il y a très peu d’humour. Cela se prend un peu trop au sérieux, ce qui n’est pas un mal en soi. Mais ça rend l’atmosphère assez lourd. Bon… je pense que je vais aller visionner Loups-Garous – Werewolves Within (2021) !
