Zodiac (2007) Yet another film I saw on the big screen when it first came out! I hadn’t really liked it before. But it’s still a good film.  I’d said it was Fincher’s worst film… but in reality, it’s just his worst.

Because the direction is still very good and he proves that he can really do anything, including a film with very little violence shown on screen.  Of course, there are the crimes of the two couples at the beginning, but that’s in the first twenty minutes. After that, nothing.

As you’ll have gathered, this is neither an action film nor a thriller. The story, based on a true story, remains interesting. But it’s presented in an overly complicated way. With no suspense, I struggled to keep going throughout.

But David Fincher is still a director who has never done anything rubbish. As for the actors, I only knew Jake Gyllenhaal well at the time. He’s impeccable in this role, as he was in his role as a cop in Prisoners. This actor has made a few flops, but is still very charismatic.

Robert Downey Jr. and Mark Ruffalo were here before they became Marvel superheroes, Iron Man and the Hulk respectively. As for Gyllenhaal, he’ll later become the villain Mysterio (who faces off against Spider-Man)… and that will also be one of his good roles. This trio of actors do extremely well in this film. It’s a real pleasure to see them in every scene they’re in, together or separately.

I said in another review that Jennifer Aniston is a replaceable actress and not an incredible one. Whether she’s here or not doesn’t make much difference to me. That’s not the case with Chloë Sevigny, who really does have something hypnotic about her. She manages to play with unease in a way that is very personal to her. She’s really good at playing the idiot who hides an immense intelligence. She’s brilliant!

On the other hand, John Carroll Lynch is a regular in horrible roles. He’s so detestable that you have to wonder. I wouldn’t feel very comfortable doing an interview with an actor like him. He’s very good! Elias Koteas is always a pleasure to watch. He totally reminds me of De Niro physically. It’s so funny!

We see a bit more of him than I thought we would… and that’s no bad thing. Clea DuVall! What a pleasant surprise to see her, even in small roles. She’s so natural you wonder if she knows a camera is filming her.

Another film with Philip Baker Hall, as always in fascinating roles.  Another person who was really cut out to be an actor.

There are actors I’m sure I’ve seen elsewhere, like Adam Goldberg, and some have faces I adore, like Jimmi Simpson and Dermot Mulroney.

So much for that review, folks !!!
