Scream 5 (2022) So… What to say, what to say? So… I’m a big fan of the first film. But as soon as I saw it, nothing equals it in this Slasher Comedy genre. Comedy… not necessarily accessible to everyone. It’s a very dark humour, of course!
The first time I saw the first Scream, I didn’t laugh at all. It’s only on the second viewing that I saw all these touches of humour.
The second one is relatively lame. It’s also the only one I’ve only seen once. I enjoyed the third one the first time, but not the second. And I think I enjoyed the fourth one more on the second viewing. As for the last one… well… not sure I want to see it again! Yet, it’s as good as the fourth one.
Good! It’s obviously nice to see Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, Jenna Ortega, and even Skeet Ulrich (rather unexpected!) Scream 5 is the first one not directed by Wes Craven. However, it has a character named Wes, and it’s also a tribute to the late director. 25 years later, I think we have definitely closed this series of films.
Well… nothing will stop a big fan from wanting to make many sequels and missing out most of the time. Because this time, frankly, everything has been used. It becomes more and more violent, more and more gory, bloody. More and more unrealistic too: people getting shot, knifed, but surviving as if nothing had happened. It’s a pity because it’s not part of the film’s humour but of its ridiculousness. The pathetic side that only makes these films worse and only makes you happy that it finally ends.
Scream 5 had to bring everything up to date (violence, mobile phones…) while being faithful to the first one (places, important characters, winks…). It continues to make fun of horror films while talking about codes (security in particular or scenes that always come back!).
Basically: it instructs while laughing. We continue to suspect everyone as usual. We keep wondering how many of them there are (the killers), and we shiver, we smile, or we laugh and we jump (for the most emotional!)
Am I going to redo my list every time? Quickly perhaps: I like I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997). But I realize that I can change a lot. I used to prefer the latter, but I really love the former now. Especially with all those actors from that time that I didn’t necessarily know when it came out.
I don’t know if there was a third one. If there was, it didn’t stick with me.
Urban Legend (1998) : the first one is great. The second one is a throwaway.
And the third one… it’s my good audience that surprisingly made me like it.
Sometimes it’s just a matter of mindset. I was expecting so much more crap after the second one, which is ultra bad.
Then there was Valentine (2001)… which is relatively lame, but which I still liked in some ways. That’s another thing I don’t understand. Anyway, I’m not going to review the others because that’s enough. A must-see for the big fans… but not for those who are desperately looking for the perfect movie. Because it won’t be this one! It’s worth it sometimes to stay with the first one (Saw, Human Centipede, Hostel…).
