The Aviary 2022 Good! I’ll start with everything that’s good about this film… before I shoot it down completely.
The plot is good at first. Right from the start, you get the sense that bad things are going to happen. But not at all in the way you imagine. Then there are dreams and hallucinations that make reality indistinguishable.
The main actresses are quite good, especially Lorenza Izzo. Here, moreover, it is good to see her in a victim’s role, whereas she was a horror in Knock Knock. Besides, it seems to me that she has worked quite a bit with Eli Roth… so not sure I want to see those collaborations.
Malin Akerman does well, despite the fact that she’s not the actress of the century. Obviously, she remains the most prominent female character in Watchmen.
Sandrine Holt has a good charisma, but we don’t see enough of her to judge anything, especially not her acting.
And finally, Chris Messina is the only male in the film. And there is nothing transcendent about him.
The film’s message gets completely lost, but it does make us ask some good questions. What makes a cult? How do you recognize it? Don’t we put ourselves in a cage enough so that others don’t have to?
So much for the positive.
If you think I’ve already started to bash this film, you should know that I haven’t even started yet!
In fact, you get lost too quickly. You don’t know where you’re going. The film goes round and round, in every sense of the word. It has this Vivarium side that I had already disliked. This side of the film where you don’t understand much, where the twists keep coming… and in the end, for nothing. And that’s the main problem with this film: it’s all for nothing, in fact! It goes off in all directions and gives almost no subtle explanation or any clarification at all.
To think that two directors worked together to make such a bad film… which had potential.
A low-budget film… but people with even less money manage to do much better.
