Rise – Blood Hunter (2007) In “Interview with a Vampire”, it was Brad Pitt who felt guilty about being a vampire. Here, it’s Lucy Liu. An actress who’s really great in action roles, notably as the funny lady in “Charlie’s Angels”! It was a real pleasure to see her in the series Elementary and in the recent film Red One (2024), among others. So, I wouldn’t say that the film is insignificant or boring, that it can join the sector of films the world doesn’t need!
I have absolutely no problem with the fact that there’s far too little blood for gore fans. The vampires are a bit different for once. Yes, Rise is… different!
It’s surprisingly down-to-earth and totally non-mystical in its treatment of the vampire theme. For example, these creatures of the night don’t have long teeth and sometimes use a knife or a snatch ring. So those expecting a classic vampire show are bound to be disappointed, as these undead are hardly distinguishable from ordinary mortals. Lucy Liu’s vendetta against her makers is more in the style of the old revenge films, and the humour is sadly totally absent from the film.
Entertaining and refreshing, even if classic vampires seem cooler to me! A nice, touching ending, some good lines in the dialogue, a great story. However, the film as a whole is pretty bad. Poorly executed, not brilliantly directed and badly acted by some of the cast. A real shame.
