Birds of Prey (2020) also known as Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn

Okay friends, Here I am!!! I’ll start by translating one of the reviews into German and it says:

“Rubbish – The film is pretty rubbish. It’s not at all about the Harley Quinn we know from the comics, and the movie has no real context; it’s just a rumble, and it’s absolutely boring.”

For me, it’s good entertainment. It would never have gotten more than three stars under such conditions. Because there’s nothing realistic about it, the story isn’t incredible, the girls’ team (not that great!) only comes together at the end (which makes the title inappropriate)… and the ending is mediocre.

Margot Robbie & Mary Elizabeth Winstead (both always perfect!) in the same film, that’s already great. But Jurnee Smollett-Bell manages to match them here. And that was no mean feat!

On the other hand, Ewan McGregor is probably in his worst role. We know that he plays gay men very well, and here he plays with that by portraying a very effeminate, but not very charismatic, villain. We’ve already seen more impressive and hypnotic villains. He’ll never be a bad actor, but he must have lost his way coming here.

Winstead, on the other hand, we’d always like to see more of on screen. She always gives her best, even in the worst films.

As for Robbie, she brings a hell of a lot of sympathy to Harley, who has never been one of my favorite characters. But Margot managed to change that.

Having said that, I’m fully aware that we’re miles away from the comics and that DC has just taken another nasty reputational hit with this film, which is far from good if I remain totally objective.

Yes, Harley is a real villain,

Yes, she does have a heart,

Yes, she’s still an anti-hero.

Yes, yes, yes!

She’s the female version of Deadpool, she’s badass, she’s got guts.

But all that doesn’t save a bad script.

The direction is pretty good, but the pace is fast. There’s not much time to take your eyes off the action… unless you’re bored by this kind of film.

The action and fight scenes are spectacular… but also totally unrealistic.

This film was supposed to be better than Suicide Squad… but it’s a failure in that respect.

Rating: 2 out of 5.
