Wargames (1983) I read this review somewhere: “back when the internet was still just a buzzword and any teenager could sneak into the US nuclear defence command centre.” No, we weren’t talking about the Internet yet, were? It took a few more years before it became a fad. Otherwise… I noticed that there is not a single criticism!? It’s almost impossible! It is a successful, entertaining and exciting film.

Frankly, it is one of the films I have wanted to see for a long time. I knew it was missing from my film culture and that it was essential. I was surprised in a good way. In any case, it did not disappoint me. Admittedly, it has aged and it was the last time to see it. But the idea was excellent from the start and was rather well exploited.

What a pleasure it was to see Matthew Broderick in this role and what a delight to discover Ally Sheedy‘s debut. I loved both in this film.

Not sure I’ll love all of director John Badham‘s films, though. Especially considering he made Saturday Night Fever (1977), which is also more or less essential… but totally depressing, I think. Well… I still have to see Dracula (1979). “Like a Bird on a Wire” (1990) is funny, but nothing more. His “Nick of Time” (1995) is very good. Still couldn’t get my hands on “Point of No Return” and I’ve been wanting to see it for a while.

Anyway! Wargames is a good movie. There’s a Wargames 2! Yes, it’s very scary. It feels like it’s an attempt to ride on a big success for lack of imagination in order to have an easy payoff. But when the sequels, already, are not with the same actors, it sucks and it is very rare that it is successful. Still, knowing me, it’s worth seeing 😉

Rating: 5 out of 5.
