The Inhabitant (2022) is a suspense horror movie directed by Jerren Lauder about a young woman who believes she is the direct descendant of axe murderer Lizzie Borden. I enjoyed watching this film. There were moments that really scared me and that’s what I look for in these films. Scaring people with Jump Scares is easy! But keeping you under tension for many seconds, or even minutes, is something else entirely. As far as the last Jump Scare in the film is concerned, it’s OK. I’m always very fussy about the last Jump Scare, as it has great power. It can make the whole film look ridiculous in a single second. And you always end up on the last note!
It’s hard to give this film a grade though. There are a few inconsistencies, and it goes on and on (which is always a shame when it comes to horror thrillers!). Not convinced by the film’s title either. The lead actress, Odessa A’zion, didn’t attract me from the start. On the contrary, I was repelled by her. But I think the more you see of her, the more you become attached to her, and I’m sure that’s deliberate. The further we get into the film, the more we see what a good actress she is.
The problem is that the charisma and naturalness of the young Lizze Broadway overshadows that of the young lead actress. I would have liked to have seen more of her. Lizzie could be an actress to watch. The problem is. She’s already committed herself to yet another Girl Power version of American Pie… and I don’t think that’s the best thing to do. If anything, it’s a way of extinguishing her career straight away and not being able to be taken seriously afterwards.
If you’re watching this film for Dermot Mulroney, you should know that we don’t see him that much. We’re happy just because it’s him. But he plays a father who couldn’t be more ordinary. For those who don’t know him, this is not the place to judge his talent.
And finally, Leslie Bibb: I thought we wouldn’t see more of her than Dermot, but that’s not the case. This excellent actress gives a wonderful performance here and clearly doesn’t disappoint her fans.
A must-see film for fans of thrills and suspense. Fans of sex and gore, look elsewhere!!!
