Freaks (2018) is an American science fiction thriller.
As for me, I was very disappointed because I hadn’t seen the poster. That can change everything! I thought it was going to be a good thriller, because I knew absolutely nothing about this film (except that Emile Hirsch was in it) and I didn’t even know what the film looked like. Yes, the film has a very nice and exciting side, but it would have had even more potential. Here’s what I think: this film is once again a huge wasted potential.
I’m not even going to give it two stars; I think it already has too many! In fact, the film becomes funny after a while, because it’s so exaggerated and ridiculous. A good thriller that turns into a rather dark superhero movie, with way too much science fiction. A film that came out just before The Boys series. So I say: an interesting starting point, but wasted potential.
The film starts in a mysterious and interesting way. Unfortunately, many questions are left open and unanswered until the end, which is disappointing. Also, the suspense is not fast enough; the interest to see this film again is very low and, as it is a low-budget production, the special effects and sound quality/sound effects are quite weak. Overall, FREAKS is a kind of X-MEN with a child in the lead role. The film loses a lot in my eyes because those unsuspected powers like time manipulation or teleportation could have been, in principle, really interesting and deep. Unfortunately, nothing was done with them.
This film also reminded me of Stephen King’s Charlie (Firestarter)—people who have powers, but who lose something as soon as they use them: blood, energy, or years of life. In short, I didn’t like it, despite a lot of good moments that are quickly drowned in the pathos of the film. But the actors are good, including the little girl.
