Grimcutty (2022) Network Hell! A cool mix of ASMR, horror, and technology. But hey…. It’s just fun! It’s far from good…

Another Shannyn Sossamon film! Decidedly, I have a feeling I’ll never see her in a masterpiece. Ah… yes I will!!! She was in The Holiday (2006), and I’d almost forgotten about her, given that she doesn’t have a very big role there. She doesn’t have one of the four main roles. That said, as a musician, she provided vocals and drums for Warpaint from 2004 to 2008. She abruptly left this excellent band after the recording of their first EP. Sossamon’s only recording with the band is 2009’s Exquisite Corpse EP.

Grimcutty is a 2022 monster horror film written and directed by John Ross. It stars Sara Wolfkind, Shannyn Sossamon, Usman Ally, and Callan Farris. It was produced by 20th Digital Studio and Capture. Grimcutty was released on Hulu in the US, on Star+ in Latin America, and on Disney+ internationally. The film has generally received negative reviews from critics. The filmmaker, who also penned the screenplay, does a good job of showing the anxiety that parents can feel about their children’s use of the Web. Unfortunately, because everything is a little too exaggerated, Asha’s father and mother—Amir (Usman Ally, A Series of Unfortunate Events) and Leah (Shannyn Sossamon, Sinister 2)—have such over-the-top reactions that they make their characters simply unbearable.

The performances of the other actors are equally forced and implausible. Grimcutty is yet another horror film about the harmful influence of technological objects on our little ones. It joins a long line of films such as the Americanized versions of Pulse (2006) and One Missed Call (2008), in which technology attacks human beings, but unfortunately fails to scare us enough to stop using our mobile phones. In fact, the only thing that really gave me the shivers in this film was the passages where the heroine does ASMR. I love ASMR!!! I was hooked on the first part. I really liked the importance of parental authority and concern. But it ends up getting a bit ridiculous!

Even the monster, which is terrifying, becomes more and more poorly made as the film progresses. He looks like a distant cousin of Ryuk (from Death Note). The story of the creature that no one sees except the protagonist who is in danger will no doubt remind movie buffs of Freddy or Pennywise. So ‘Grimcutty’ isn’t a film that will go down in history but it does offer some interesting content, as well as being quite scary at times (after all, it all depends on your fears)! 2.5

Rating: 2.5 out of 5.
