The Climb (2019) has one of the best intros in the movie world! That’s it! Everything else sucks!!!!!!!!!
On a more serious note, the first ten minutes are great. The end tries to do the same thing as the beginning, but it doesn’t work too well; everything in between is long, slow, and boring. The direction is good, with very few cuts in each scene (as if we were watching a long play), but this film is cruelly lacking in magic. This feature film proves that you also need rhythm, music, and energy. It’s not enough to film a bunch of people who have learned their lines and who are in the right place at the right time, being natural.
This film claims to be very clever and subtle when it is not. It prides itself on being an auteur, non-Hollywood, touching film. The critics said: “…Woody Allen-like”! I agree: Woody managed to make films just as boring!
“A virtuoso comedy!” I’d rather say it’s so bad it’s funny! “A modernity and a funniness that sweeps everything away!” Yes, it’s so bad! “The revelation of a filmmaker” Indeed, because it takes genius to be so useless in cinema.
Michael Angelo Covino & Kyle Marvin did almost everything in this film: wrote the story, directed, and produced. I really hope they’ll stop soon and not produce so many films polluting the cinema. Decidedly, the COVID-19 pandemic has postponed this film two, three times. Too bad they didn’t manage to cancel it.
