Birdman (2014) is a dark comedy drama starring Michael Keaton. The movie is also known as The Unexpected Viture of Ignorance.

I was expecting a lot from this film… but it gave me nothing! Right from the start, I said to myself, “Two hours is going to be a long time… unless the film is really gripping!”

Unfortunately, my first thought was the right one. I actually waited rather impatiently for it to end. I think it is, once again, a pseudo-intellectual film.

I’m not a fan of director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu. All his films are worth seeing, but they’re not films to watch again. Whether it’s Babel, The Revenant, or 21 Grams. Well… I’m going to contradict myself: I’m going to see these films again… but that’s ONLY because I forgot to write a review… and it’s been too long for me to remember them properly.

The film is, however, incredibly well made. It gives the impression that there are very few cuts. The effect is impressive. As a result, you get the impression that these actors are in the middle of a play rather than a film. Their performances are quite spectacular. But I still think that the legendary Emma Stone, Michael Keaton, Edward Norton, and Naomi Watts are in one of their (if not their) worst films.

I found these other reviews interesting:

  1. “Purely a matter of taste. The casting and direction are brilliant! Everything else is debatable. Personally, I found it too confusing and disturbing at times.”
  2. “Nonsense… …and the pseudo-intellectual high society screams at the critics…. genius… as always with this kind of twisted and clever work.”
  3. “Nope. A film about… actors… who play badly? Just because the film suggests I’m a snob if I don’t find the film good doesn’t mean it’s good. With such a cast, I expected better. In any case, we can do without this film.”
  4. “Birdman works incomparably well in terms of style and the message conveyed, in a positive sense. A slightly confusing opening ok, but then it works like a charm. Keaton & Norton unbeatable, unfortunately Naomi Watts is a bit under… still.”
  5. “Really? The film isn’t that good…. Most of the rubbish, especially dealt with, but I haven’t seen the second half, so I may have missed the punchline…”

The last review is very positive! Now that’s someone who liked: “and the Oscar goes to…. If Michael Keaton doesn’t win the 2015 Oscar for this film, then I don’t understand anything in the world! Played in an absolutely grandiose way, with a lot of humour, charm, and self-mockery! I hesitated for a long time to go and see this film because I didn’t really know if it was for me, given that I don’t usually watch such bizarre films. Fortunately, I gave in to these 2 hours. A perfect cast right down to the supporting roles. A must-see and for me, it’s already one of the best films of 2015!!!!”

That’s it! It’s up to you to decide whether you want to see it or not…

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.
