Legion Of Super-Heroes (2023) Devastated by the loss of her mother and her home planet Krypton, Supergirl, aka Kara Zor-El, struggles to adapt to her new life on Earth, despite being mentored by her cousin Superman.
Following her cousin’s advice, Supergirl leaves their time-space to attend the Legion Academy in the 31st century. There, she quickly makes new friends, as well as a new enemy with old ties: Brainiac 5. But a nefarious plot lurks in the shadows – the mysterious group known as the Dark Circle is after a powerful weapon kept in the academy’s vault. Find out if Supergirl and her new teammates can rise to the challenge in this thrilling animated film from the DC Universe!
What a pleasure it was for me to see Supergirl, Superman, Batman, and Flash in less than 15 minutes! Alas, compared to the enthusiasm and impatience I had to see this animated feature, the pleasure wasn’t incredible.
I was relatively disappointed. Once again, the intro is excellent… but doesn’t live up to its promise, as everything slackens off immediately afterwards. Jeff Wamester is not (yet) one of my favourite directors, unlike someone like Jake Castorena, for example. But to each his own! Here we see the destruction of Krypton and Supergirl being sent to Earth by her mother to find her cousin Superman. We also meet the Legion of Super-Heroes, a team just like Marvel’s Justice League or Avengers.
We meet Brainiac 5, the fifth clone of a super villain. The other four are dangerous psychopathic criminals, so we’re inclined to lump Brainiac 5 in with them. But Supergirl discovers her other facets. Not everything here is exciting, but there are some good moments. The idea for a Legion of Super-Heroes movie was conceived by Butch Lukic and Jim Krieg, who wanted to incorporate both Supergirl and the team into the Tomorrowverse.
Lukic hired Jeff Wamester as director because of their previous collaboration on Justice Society: World War II (2021) which is just that good. Exactly like Green Lantern – Beware My Power (2022). In fact, these films are nice… but no Jeff Wamester animated feature deserves more than three stars, in my opinion. A nice little moment, but nothing more, not packed with non-stop action, if ever. Well… I’m still going to throw myself into her three ‘Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths’ films, but that’s really because I’m a fan of these superheroes.
I’ve grown to love Supergirl through the DC Super Hero Girls series, but I’m not sure she’s really true to her core character there, given that she’s a sort of Rebel Rocker over there. Important details that make her my favourite female character in these little cartoons.
