Canadian horror film Haunter (2013) is one hell of an artistic paranormal experience, poetic as can be. The actors are quite good, with as much Eleanor Zichy as Michelle Nolden or Peter Outerbridge. Well… Stephen McHattie once again manages to stand out with his extraordinary charisma. He has something very attractive and fascinating; you want to trust him, but he can be terrifying and unpleasant. A great actor!
Abigail Breslin, the lead actress, apparently plays in a lot of very good, if not excellent, films like Little Miss Sunshine, both Zombieland, and also The Call. Well, she also played in the lamentable Final Girl, but everyone makes mistakes! This film is just good because it goes all over the place in a very messy way. Abigail wears a Siouxsie and the Banshees jumper during most of the film, so it’s no surprise to hear this band’s music in the end credits. Her room is also covered with posters of David Bowie, The Cure, The Smiths, and Joy Division—a heavenly room in a rather purgatorial universe! A life of the damned.
I can’t say that this film is bad; it really took me over forty minutes. The direction is impeccable. Only the complications and the slowness of the film contribute to the fact that it does not come close to perfection and has quite a few moments where you end up losing interest due to a lack of coherence or interest in certain events of the past or present. Another film to see, but not to watch again.
