Antiviral (2012) Caleb Landry Jones is an actor who is everything and its opposite! He’s handsome and ugly, feminine and masculine, sympathetic and detestable, angelic and diabolical. In fact, he’s just like the film, which is extremely boring and interesting at the same time. Unfortunately, it just gets worse and worse. A better ending would have given this film two stars, but it’s too unhealthy, too disturbing, too disgusting. The last twenty minutes have ruined the film, at least as far as I’m concerned. In fact, this Brandon Cronenberg film is a real… Cronenberg!!!! Apparently, the son is just as twisted as his father.
It’s the same malaise created, the same disgust provoked. It’s impressive! I can easily understand those who would tell me that there’s neither head nor tail in this feature film. All that potential wasted. There’s very little color in this film. We’re constantly in white. The walls are white, many of the outfits are white, the beds are white, as are the cushions and blankets on them. Even the main character is extremely pale. And what’s more, he’s getting awfully sick! There’s a lot of technology and no nature.
Sarah Gadon is the film’s beauty. She’s the only thing, the only person who brings color to this film. And yet, she’s also the biggest victim. Malcolm McDowell, always in the creepiest movies!
A film that I won’t recommend, that I won’t see again, that I’ll try to forget quickly. It won’t be too difficult. A feel-bad movie, that’s for sure!
