Dirty Blonde – Favourite Record
EP – 2023

Dirty Blonde is a band that has just arrived in the last two years. In fact, as I write these lines, I don’t think there’s even a Wikipedia page devoted to them yet.

No album yet, just this EP and a few singles. But don’t panic, it’ll all come to pass!

On Soundcloud, the only sentence describing the band is ‘Your dad’s new favourite band.’ Amusing, considering the title is Favourite Record.

Dirty Blonde are an alternative rock duo from Manchester made up of members Ailis Mackay and Hayley Tait. Yes, two women just like the Soap Girls or Bleached, but not sisters like those two other bands. Leaving aside Blondie, Dirty Blonde is the second band with the word Blonde in it that’s really good and deserves a place in my heart and my collection. The other being Long Blondes, who sadly disappeared far too soon.
Ah… damn: I’ll forget 4 Non Blondes, of course! A very good band too.

The first track is just an introductory instrumental. It’s funny, because it’s as grand as if it were the intro to a full album, perfectly well prepared. And once again, yes, the title is indeed Favourite Record!

If ever, Dirty Blonde: it’s also a 2000 play by Claudia Shear,
the 2006 memoirs of rock musician and actress Courtney Love, whose full name is Dirty Blonde, The Diaries of Courtney Love.
And Dirty Blonde is also a hair colour!

This band looks like a lot of others, but for those who like these kinds of music, it’s a treat. A little pop rock, but mostly alternative indie rock. These rockers may not revolutionise rock, but they’ll make it popular with the uninitiated…

They’ll also appeal to those who were afraid that Rock would die. I do mean Rock, don’t I? I’m not talking about Progressive Rock with twenty-minute guitar solos. No, that’s not something you’ll find here.

Here, there’s a joy in living and playing music, without being naive in their lyrics. Their music is powerful, catchy, entertaining, sometimes soaring, and that’s all you need to start a beautiful morning or end a trying day. 14 minutes and 28 seconds of blissful, no-holds-barred fun. The band’s humour and energy are infectious.

The vocals are not aggressive, but sensual and solid. No screaming or nasally punk vocals, no screaming from the guts of Métalleux.

On Spotify, there are only 8 songs to listen to. The new EP will be called ‘Looking for Trouble’ and is already on pre-order.

On Instagram, you can find them under wearedirtyblonde (We are Dirty Blonde).
Don’t confuse this band with The Dirty Blonde from Glasgow, UK.
Nor with The Dirty Blondes from Prague, Czech Republic.
They’re all good bands, but it’s true that it’s not a very original name either.

On the other hand, there’s also a group of the same name, notably on Bandcamp, who do what they call ‘power electronics, noise walls and the like’!

Basically, I find it totally unbearable and I wish them as little success as I wish the band I’m reviewing. If they manage to break through, then they’ll eclipse the others with the same name.

We’ll see all that in the near future!

Rating: 5 out of 5.
