Brokedown Palace is about two young American women on vacation who were wrongfully sentenced for drug trafficking and forced to spend 33 years in a dilapidated prison in Thailand. The trio of Claire Danes, Kate Beckinsale and Bill Pullman work perfectly. Really very good and moving. It’s impossible not to think of Midnight Express, in which the conditions of detention were already unbearable. And the subject is the same.
I remember reading a comment from one viewer, “Great film with Claire Danes, the most beautiful and natural actress in the universe!” I completely understand that point of view. She is exceptional. But Kate is all lovely here too. As for Bill, it’s a very good role as the non-corrupt, non-corrupt lawyer in search of real justice.
Another reviewer said: “WOW !!!!!! We can only say WOW to this film!!! It is now my favourite film! It shows so much depth and an inseparable friendship! I also love this movie because it is so realistic. It could happen to anyone. Simply fantastic!”
Yes, once again, this isn’t a film with heroes running around in slow motion with lots of explosions behind them. It’s gripping and touching.
Another comment from someone who’s in love with Claire: “Mmmmmmmmmh, Claire Danes, what a woman !!!!! I’m not giving the film an “excellent” rating, I’m giving HER! The film isn’t bad…” Ah, but then again! Because she’s not the film’s only interest. Anyway!
This film is simply brilliant. It’s not perfect, but it’s still excellent. Above all, it shows just how strong friendship can be and that you have to stand up to a friend to protect him or her in their innocence. A film that even fulfills a human and educational duty! What more can I say except that it’s a must-see. It makes one ponder…. But what about you? What would you do for someone you love?
