Duplicity (2025) was directed by Tyler Perry, who is also an actor whose credits include Alex Cross (2012), Gone Girl (2014), Ninja Turtles 2 (2016), Those Who Wish Me Dead (2021), and many more. Not always convincing, but none of these films are throwaways. They’re all worth seeing once.
Duplicity (marketed as Tyler Perry’s Duplicity), is an American film also written and produced by Tyler Perry. The film stars Kat Graham, Meagan Tandy, Tyler Lepley, and RonReaco Lee. All these actors are good.
The direction is not bad at all. But the film has its ups and downs. It starts off very well and kept me gripped for a good hour. Then there’s a dip and it goes too far in all directions. The plot twists are interesting, but a little too big at times. And the last twenty minutes are rather nice. Except for those who only like very dark films.
When I saw Only for One Night (2016), I wrote in my review: “The plot is 1 notch above Tyler Perry’s worst film. You know what’s going to happen in the first half hour.” Yes, I admit I’m not a huge fan of his!
But it’s still a decent film, not least because we’ve seen far worse. It raises the eternal questions: are cops always racist? Do they always get away with killing foreigners? And who can you really trust? Her husband? Your best friend? The first policeman you come across? Who are the real victims? Were the victims also former criminals? What excuses what?
Of course, the film doesn’t answer these questions, but it does make you think and shows yet another point of view… which can either muddy the waters even more, or confirm our thoughts. But whatever happens, we need to keep an open mind. Because all too often, lives are at stake.
According to Wikipedia, the film has received negative reviews from critics. Variety and the Huffington Post called it a soap opera. Indeed, I thought I was watching a TV film after a while. This isn’t really great cinema, it’s just a little entertainment.
If you want to pass the time and have nothing else to put under your teeth… why not! But don’t make it a priority!
