Technically well made, this film is only suitable for novices of the genre, as this comment I found says: “Another boring horror film. As I write this, the film is still playing in the background. I hope it ends soon.
For newcomers to the genre!”
Indeed, we are being served the same old recipes for the umpteenth time. So… meh!!!
So, if anything, this film is a slasher!
So… if you hate this genre, you can safely give it a miss.
Let’s look at the positives:
Thanks to its fast-paced direction, moments of classic suspense that are sometimes effective, strong characters without the typical screams of genre films, and a dark atmosphere, the film is a good adaptation of a classic starring Jamie Lee Curtis. But there may be too many jump scares!
The first victim is my favourite actress in this film. Well, I’ll save you some time rather than playing guessing games: if you’re watching this film for Jessica Stroup, it’s not worth it. On the other hand, if she had been the lead actress, the film would have been much more powerful and interesting. Still, Brittany Snow—who is in the excellent Hangman (2017)—is very good… but she’s far from extraordinary. In short, these two actresses should have been swapped.
Otherwise, there’s nothing special about this film, which doesn’t really add anything… except perhaps another good role for Idris Elba as a detective.
Johnathon Schaech is one of those very handsome, brooding actors who make an impression with their charisma and often come across as intimidating. That doesn’t stop him from having made some big mistakes along the way, such as The Legend of Hercules (2014), which is one of the worst peplum films ever made.
Personally, it was in 8 MM 2 that he made the biggest impression on me. I also know that he is known, in particular, for That Thing You Do (1996), which is a musical film, but also for The Forsaken (2001), which is a good vampire film! In any case, he’s not bad at all.
Johnathon is also in the rather pointless remake of REC (2007) called Quarantine (2008). Actually, now that I think about it, he has very rarely been in good films. That’s probably why he has also made quite a few TV films. He even plays the main character in Road House 2 (2006)!
Thanks to the producer of ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’, viewers are treated to almost the same plot in a new package. From the very first minutes, everything seems familiar, but the film nevertheless manages to capture some good moments.
We can certainly mention the young actors, who make a good contribution to the plot, and all the quality work done by the film crew, which leaves a good visual impression on the viewer… but that’s not enough to make it a good film.
There you go!
You now have all the information you need to decide whether or not you want to see this film.
I will conclude with another negative review I found: ‘A poor remake, even though the original wasn’t any better. Cheap production values and mediocre actors. It’s got it all!’
